Nashville Music Matters: Writing A Song For Rayna Jaymes

Rayna Jaymes is the queen of country music (and many other things) on Nashville and on March 16 when Nashville return from its winter hiatus she’ll even marry the love of her life. It’s a happy occasion and recently I even wrote here in-length about their journey as a couple. But, Rayna Jaymes is also much more than the sum of her romantic relationships or any other drama that been going on in her life – she’s an artist first.

It’s been a long time since we heard her sing anything let alone a solo. I miss it and according to the feedback I got to my recent post about ‘Why I Miss Rayna Jaymes’ Singing on Nashville’ it appear I’m not alone.

On Twitter it opened a whole discussion about how wonderful it would be speak again through music especially in light of everything she has been through. Then it was suggested that she could have written a whole album just from the way Deacon chose to share with her the news about his cancer. Yes, the same moment where we collectively decided he should never be allowed again to deliver any news to anyone.

Anyway…that led to a game of suggested track titles: ‘Another Bitter Memory’, ‘Sorry Not

I really want to write a sad song now

Sorry for The Slap’, ‘You Never Answer My Calls’, ‘Fight for Us’, ‘Cabin Sex’, ‘It’s Not Pity You See In My Eyes’, ‘That’s Not How The Song Ends For You’, ‘Show Them What True Love Is’, ‘If You Were Trying to Break My Heart You Just Did’ and fan favorite (and a personal proud moment): ‘You Smashed My Heart, I’ll Smash Your Guitar’.

See? It’s a country platinum album waiting to happen. I suggest to name it, ‘When My Lover Told Me He’s Dying’ But I’m ready to negotiate and just let it be a bonus track.

Only problem (apart from the obvious of course) is these are only titles. So, since it’s really a long hiatus and since I can’t resist a creative challenge and since I’m really curious where this idea can go, I decided to try something.

I wrote the lyrics for ‘You Smashed My Heart, I’ll Smash Your Guitar’ and now challenge you to either write lyrics to another song of this track list or write music for my song. Be the Gunnar to my Scarlett, the Deacon for my Rayna.

Nashville is a show about songwriters in music city where co-write is the name of the game. Let’s let life imitate and co-write our imaginary Rayna Jaymes album. Who knows, maybe it will really give Rayna Jaymes the push she needs to get back on stage.

You Smashed My Heart, I’ll Smash Your Guitar

Hey you, love of my life, you’re slipping away.
You promised to give me the beautiful words from your songs
but all day you’re screening my calls

Hey you, man of my dreams, look in my eyes.
You dreamed of having me all to yourself
but it’s all just a lie if I can’t even hold your hand.

Hey you, my one and only, ask me to stay.
You said you and me are bound for eternity, forever in love
But you only fight for us when I’m with another man.

Not every love story ends with goodbye
Not every pain needs a whiskey,
Not every fight turns to a crash
Not every kiss will kill you.
I’ll scream and shout and break everything here.
Baby, you smashed my heart –
I’ll smash your guitar.

Love is a gamble and we already lost
Life is short and we already died
God is tired of listening and so are our friends.

It’s you, me and the hope of a child
I stopped running from us, please stop running from life.
Don’t let us end up as a song.

Not every love story ends with goodbye
Not every pain needs a whiskey,
Not every fight turns to a crash
Not all kisses will kill you.
I’ll scream and shout and break everything here.
Baby, you smashed my heart –
I’ll smash your guitar.

  1. O.K. It totally wrote itself. Tell them to call me for the rights to my song!

ITS NOT PITY YOU SEE IN MY EYES

Its Not Pity You See In My Eyes
    Its only love
    Its only just eternal, beautiful
    Hardwon heartachin’ heartbreakin’ love

    I earned this place
    Don’t take it away
I worked so hard for us to be in this space
Baby please, don’t push me away

Its Not Pity You See here in My Eyes
    Its only love
    Its only just eternal, beautiful
    Hardwon heartachin’ heartbreakin’ love

I held you close and held onto us
Through your worst, the storms we were
When I saved you and you saved me
    Don’t push me away
    I earned this place

Its Not Pity you see in My Eyes
    Its really only love
    Its only just eternal, beautiful
    Hardwon heartachin’ heartbreakin’ love
